Barcelona contributes to the international arts scene not only in a physical sense with its galleries, vibrant architecture and lively entertainment, but also more timelessly via the film industry. The city has featured in many films and Barcelona’s history and energy have preserved it as a place of intrigue for film directors.
The centrality of Barcelona in the Spanish Civil War prompted Ken Loach to reference the city in Land and Freedom (1995), a film about the involvement of a Liverpudlian socialist in the POUM militia to combat fascism. One of the most recognisable scenes is the factionalist battle fought among the left along Las Ramblas.
